Department of Computer Science

Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology

The following scholarships are administered by the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology. Contact Alison Esser (aesser@iastate.edu) for more information.

Diane Marie Heimbuch Scholarship - Application deadline February 1, 2022

Award:

  • One or more $1000 awards are given each year.  This may be a renewal award for the previous recipient who continues to meet the criteria, or a new award. Awardees will receive $500 in Fall semester and $500 in Spring semester. A student may not receive the award for more than three years.

Applicant Criteria:

  • Student must be a resident of the State of Iowa.
  • Student must be an undergraduate majoring in Biology, Genetics, or Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
  • Student must be at least a sophomore in standing and attending full time.
  • Student must be in good academic standing with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Student must have a least fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters remaining at Iowa State University to receive the full $1,000 award.
  • Preference will be given to a student interested in animal biology.

Darlene and Melvin Larsen Scholarship - Application deadline February 1, 2022

Award:

  • One or more $1000 awards will be given in 2020.  Awardees will receive $500 in Fall semester and $500 in Spring semester. Previous awardees may re-apply.

Applicant Criteria:

  • Student must be an undergraduate majoring in Biology, Genetics, or Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.
  • Student must be in good academic standing with a 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Students must have a least fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters remaining at Iowa State University to receive the full $1,000 award and must maintain full time status.
  • Preference is given to students who demonstrate leadership skills as evidenced by involvement with community or on-campus activities, organizations, etc.
  • Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need. The FAFSA must have been submitted by December 1, 2020.
  • Preference is given to students with career interests in genetics, developmental biology, or cell biology.

Scholarship Opportunities Inside Iowa State University

  • Cargill Global Scholars Program. The Cargill Global Scholars Program is a distinctive scholarship opportunity that provides financial support in addition to leadership development opportunities through seminars, networking events, and a mentorship program.  Enrollment in one of the partner universities, of which Iowa State University is one, is required.
  • Hixson Opportunity Awards.  This scholarship is available to entering freshmen who wish to study any major offered at Iowa State University. Students must have faced challenges of personal and/or financial hardship.
  • Roy J. Carver Trust Scholarship.  Scholarships are available to full-time (12 hours or more) students who will be starting their junior year in the fall semester of the award year. The program centers on providing substantial scholarships to students who struggle to overcome significant social and economic obstacles in the pursuit of their education or who may be living in circumstances that may not normally be taken into account by other financial aid programs.
  • ISU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Scholarships.  The online application period for 2021-22 undergraduate scholarships from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will be Sept 1, 2020 through March 1, 2021.  BCBio students are eligible to apply for many STEM scholarships offered.
