BCBio senior presents research at this spring’s ISU Symposium on Undergraduate Research & Creative Expression May 11, 2011 Reka Keleman, a senior in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCBio), gave an oral presentation at the ISU Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression held in the ISU Memorial Union on April 19, 2011. The BCBio undergraduate major requires students to do an independent research project for credit during their senior year. Reka’s independent research project was mentored by Professor Carolyn Lawrence, a GDCB collaborating professor working for the USDA.

Professor Vasant Honavar, BCBio Curriculum Committee member, named a Fellow of the International Society of Intelligent Biological Medicine.

Following a review of the current curriculum, the BCBio Supervisory Committee has developed a new BCBio curriculum that includes a minor in BCBio. The curriculum took effect in fall 2015.

Students in the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB) graduate program were among 25 organizations participating in the Girls in Science Festival held in February 2015 at the Science Center of Iowa & Blank IMAX Dome Theater.  The BCB group held an interactive workshop that involved using computer games to solve bioinformatics problems and shared information about the undergraduate program in BCBio.  The Festival connects girls and families with female STEM professionals from the Des Moines area.  Interactive “STEM Zones” and collaborative workshops provide one-on-one connections for girls and female mentors from local companies and educational institutions.
